Among the vineyards of Leonardo

Roding through the wine-growing area of Montalbano and Vinci, Leonardo's hometown
by  Prato Area

The route, all on paved road, takes us to discover the area devoted to the production of Montalbano wine.
The itinerary first crosses the rows of Carmignano, the area that boasts the oldest "D.O.C.G. recognition" in the world (1716, Grand Duke Cosimo III de' Medici established the boundaries of the Carmignano territory) and then veers to the Pistoia side, passing on the Chianti Montalbano D.O.C.G. road to Vinci, the town of Leonardo.

From Vinci you climb back up to San Baronto, a true shrine of Tuscan cycling; on these climbs every week hundreds of cyclists come to train on the roads that were once the testing ground for a young Vincenzo Nibali. After descending toward Quarrata, the route continues on the plain, parallel to the hills just past it, until you return to the starting point.

The clockwise trail requires average preparation, the climbs up to Pinone and San Baronto are gentle and you have plenty of time to enjoy the wide views that open up among the vineyards and olive groves, while for more trained cyclists they can be ridden with long ratios to do some "legwork." In the counter-clockwise direction, there are a couple of challenging tears after passing Vinci, but they are of moderate length.

The trail intersects the route of the Ciclostorica Medicea. The landscapes will repay you for every push on the pedal you make!
