Apuan Gravel: Porta Lake – Via Francigena – Carrara

An intoxicating loop itinerary between the scents of the sea and the scents of vineyards, along historic roads such as the Via Francigena.

A small but pleasant loop route that follows dirt roads and low-traffic back roads on a discovery of somewhat hidden areas. An absolute must for those who enjoy dirt roads.

Start by pedaling along the Marina di Massa seafront and continue for 3.1 miles (5 kilometers) to Cinquale, where you’ll turn inland following the banks of the Versilia River and traversing the Porta Lake Nature Park. Leaving the green area, head towards Massa, where you can enjoy the first stop (and a second breakfast). Continue along some minor roads, tackling a short challenging stretch before reaching Carrara, where you can make another stop, be it for food and wine or culture. Continuing on, you come to the most challenging part of the route, with an initial climb that leads to Codena. After a short descent to La Foce, tackle the last 328 feet (100 meters) in elevation before beginning the gentle return to the sea.
