Between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri
Along this loop itinerary, we have an opportunity to learn about the history of this area and its origins. We start from Donoratico and ride along the Accattapane road that runs along the high ground with the ruins of the Donoratico Castle Tower.
We continue gaining altitude toward the historic center of Castagneto Carducci, the first stop for cyclists eager to ride, but also to indulge in food and wine temptations, with the possibility to visit the Museo Archivio e Casa Carducci. Continuing for about 1 km of the Provincial Road 329 Bocca di Valle to the detour to Via di Segalari (namesake of the Gherardesca Castle), we enter the white hill ridge road, between rows of vineyards: this stretch offers spectacular views of both the Tuscan hinterland and the Tyrrhenian coast. We arrive on the Via Bolgherese (The Wine Road, where wineries of particular relevance of the Bolgheri DOC are located), and later at the monumental Viale dei Cipressi and the historic center of Bolgheri, places that inspired the Nobel laureate poet Giosué Carducci. In Bolgheri it is possible to taste typical local food and wine products. Travelling the 5 km or so of the Viale dei Cipressi we arrive in the locality of San Guido where nature lovers can visit (with a guide) the WWF Oasis of Bolgheri, a paradise for birdwatchers. From here retracing the Via Bolgherese we return to Donoratico, the departure and arrival point of the itinerary.
