Cycling along the Pescia River
The route begins in Pescia and follows the course of the river of the same name, which originates in the mountains above Vellano and flows into the Padule di Fucecchio (Fucecchio Marsh).
From the Passerella Sforzini, a pedestrian footbridge that connects the historic center of Pescia to the left bank of the river, we start cycling along the river bank, avoiding the traffic and riding under the road bridges; on the right we can see the hill of Montecarlo, and on the left the hills of the villages of Uzzano, La Costa, Buggiano, Colle, Cozzile, Stignano, Massa and Montecatini Alto.
We continue to ride along the river’s edge, recognizing Monsummano Alto to the west and, slightly to the right and further down, Montevettolini. On the plain below lie Montecatini Terme and Monsummano Terme. Moving on along the bank of the Pescia River, the valley begins to open up before us and, almost as far as the eye can see, we begin to get a glimpse of the basin of the Padule di Fucecchio marsh.
After a while, we come to the town of Ponte Buggianese, where we leave the dirt path of the river bank for a moment and cross the small village: a good time to stop for a rest.
We set off again and cross the river to the bank on the opposite side.
We start to catch sight of the Great Lake, an immense poplar grove and the Monaca Nature Reserve - where numerous bird species can be seen. Shortly thereafter, the itinerary makes a short loop that will take us into the rarefied atmosphere of the Padule marsh, before returning to the river bank and back to Pescia, traveling back along the same route.
