Cycling in the Middle Ages in the Bagnone Valley

A loop tour for all, to discover the essence of Lunigiana

Lunigiana is a land of villages and medieval castles, with fascinating towers that dot the landscape. This route, suitable for young and old, is one of the easiest to ride on a e-bike (if you use a regular bike, you have to keep in mind that is a route with several stretches of medium level).

The itinerary starts at the “Pieve di Sorano” Didactic Center in Filattiera, E-Bike Center. From there, through the Protected Natural Area of the Magra River, it reaches the municipality of Villafranca and the village of Malgrate, dominated by a fortress and a tall circular tower.

Then, the path continues to the market town of Bagnone, which crossed by the stream of the same name that carves through the rock and moves towards the valley with small jumps and waterfalls visible from the ancient bridges of the village. A short but steep ascent can bring you to the upper village, with the castle of the Noceti family, today private residence. On the way back, you pass through the medieval town of Virgoletta, developed along the Via Francigena, until you reach the village of Filetto, surrounded by walls that trace the perfect quadrangular shape. From here, along the state road, you return to the Pieve di Sorano.
