Cycling on the slopes of Montalbano
The route winds through San Baronto, Lamporecchio and Porciano, offering, numerous panoramic viewpoints along the way, from which you can admire the surrounding area: the countryside and the sunny slopes of Montalbano, the mountain range that characterizes Valdinievole. A trail suitable for both walking and cycling.
Setting off from San Baronto, right from the start there are sweeping views of the valley below. Follow the route along CAI Trail 820, descending southwards and passing through olive groves. After going past the hamlet of Alberghi and carrying on beyond Spicchio, you can admire the splendid Villa Rospigliosi. After about 4 km you will come to Lamporecchio, famous for its “brigidini”, tasty and crispy sweet wafers. A visit to the Parish Church of Santo Stefano is a must. Inside it, there is a valuable glazed terracotta altarpiece attributed to Giovanni della Robbia.
Resuming the hike along Trail 218, you gradually climb to Porciano, a quaint medieval village. This town developed around the two towers built by the Guidi Counts in the early 13th century, which are still visible today.
Moving on, for another 1.5 km beyond Porciano, you will come to the highest point of the trail near the Sasso di Pietra, an imposing monolith. Continue along the Montalbano ridge (Trail 800) as far as the first turning on the left, which leads back to San Baronto.
