In the heart of Apuan marble: Colonnata and Ponti di Vara

Cycling where marble comes to life: an itinerary between quarries and history

This itinerary offers an immersion in the history of marble quarrying, leading to the discovery of a unique world of contrasting and fascinating aspects. Among open-pit quarries, tunnels, processing areas, large machinery and endless landscapes, you have the opportunity to connect with a local culture that, through labor, creates art.

Start pedaling from the seaside Marina di Massa to reach Massa then continue along the Apuan ramps until getting to Colonnata, the highest point of the route at an altitude of 1740 feet (530 meters). Descend to Torano then Carrara, where a stop to visit the splendid Cathedral is recommended. Finally, return towards the sea to finish the itinerary along the coast.

You will need to carry a light to cross the dimly lit Monte Croce Tunnel extending 2198 feet (670 meters). The route can only be traveled counterclockwise, as the tunnel is one-way. Be sure to pay attention to the passage of the trucks transporting marble.
