The Heart Trail in Valleriana

A challenging itinerary along mule tracks and paths surrounded by nature.

Valleriana or Svizzera Pesciatina is a fascinating area of Valdinievole, north of the Pescia River, characterized by splendid natural and picturesque landscapes.

You can explore it by bicycle, following a heart-shaped loop trail, maintained by the Pescia CAI: the route is marked by the typical red-and-white trail signs.

From the starting point in Pescia, the route winds along ancient mule tracks and paths surrounded by nature and leads to the Church of Santa Margherita, where you can admire an exceptional panoramic view.

Carrying on uphill, you will come to the villages of Medicina and San Quirico, two of the ten “Castella” in Valleriana, as far as the village of Calamari.

Continuing along another mule track, you will come to Vellano, a charming medieval village, also part of the “Castella”. The route then leads to Macchino along a convenient forest road. Next, you cross the locality of Malocchio, where you can stop for water.

Moving on from here, a splendid view of the entire Valdinievole opens up and, in a short time, you will be back in Pescia, where the two sections of the itinerary meet, completing the heart-shaped route.
