The path of the Vinsanto in Torrita di Siena
According to documents, the route takes the ancient medieval route that joined the two castles of Torrita and Montefollonico, the last bastions of the Republic of Siena against Montepulciano, an ally of Florence.
The trail starts from the camper area in Torrita di Siena and connects the medieval village to the jewel hamlet of Montefollonico, arriving at Porta Follonica. Along the trail there are five equipped areas for a break with benches and a sign with directions for the route. An information board tells us the history of Torrita di Siena, Montefollonico, the circestian monastery in Santa Maria a Follonica (called Il Conventaccio) and of the tribulations of Ghino di Tacco, the “Gentleman Bandit” born to a noble family from Torrita, narrated by Boccaccio in the Decameron and mentioned by Dante in the Divine Comedy. The tradition of Vinsanto cannot be missed, it is the territory's product of excellence, a symbol of Tuscan hospitality and the star of the event “Lo gradireste un goccio di Vin Santo?” (Would you like to taste some Vin Santo?) which is held every year on December 8 in Montefollonico.
