The Pizzorne Plateau from Villa Basilica

A challenging route connecting nature and history.

Our itinerary starts from the center of Villa Basilica then unfolds as a challenging tour. You begin with a 4.3-mile (7-kilometer) climb to the top of the Pizzorne Plateau, a mountainous area in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines stretching between Villa Basilica, Capannori and Lucca. Immersed in the silence and nature of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, this climb offers spectacular views but requires a great deal of effort. Once reaching the summit, take a well-deserved rest, knowing that the most challenging part of the trail is now behind you!

From the top of the Pizzorne Plateau begins a long, steep descent that takes you first to Matraia then up to the beautiful Villa Reale of Marlia, where stopping to admire its majesty is a must. Then continue for 3.2 miles (10 kilometers) along pleasant ups and downs, pedaling through the green hills in the surrounds and spying some of the most fascinating historic villas in the Lucca area.

Before concluding your tour, a non-strenuous 1.9-mile (3-kilometer) climb to Il Colle awaits you, followed by a very soft uphill from Collodi back to Villa Basilica.
