Tour of Mount Cetona by bike
This itinerary makes a loop at the foot of Mount Cetona; the elevation profile is characterized by continuous changes of gradient, and for 7 kilometers you travel on a beautiful dirt road through the heart of the mountain.
From the main square of Sarteano you take the road toward Radicofani to make a left-hand turn at the first junction, after the sports field, toward San Casciano dei Bagni. The road, with several ups and downs, passes through The Biancheto picnic area and reaches the Cancelli pass on an uphill road with two short but challenging irregular sections, 14 percent and 12 percent respectively. From here (9,8 kilometers from Sarteano) it continues downhill toward San Casciano dei Bagni. From the village turn back onto the road to Sarteano (Provincial Road 89 "della Montagna di Cetona") and after 700 meters turn left following the sign for Podere Armatello. Take the dirt road and continue on the main track, with a great view of Radicofani and mount Amiata.
After 1,5 kilometer the road descends steeply. After 4.9 kilometers you reach a large crossroads and continue uphill. After 900 meters the road bends left, skirting the rocky slopes of Mount Cetona, and you arrive at the village of Fonte Vetriana. You move forward downhill for 1,2 kilometer on the main track as far as State Road 478 (Sarteano - Radicofani), where you make a right-hand turn toward Sarteano (7 kilometers). As soon as you take State Road 478, the abbey of Spineto, founded in 1085, deserves a stop.
