The wool and silk ridge by bicycle
The trail climbs up to the Calvana ridge, a natural area characterized by vast areas of grassland, interrupted by thickets and groves, where you can encounter grazing animals in the wild, such as horses, or the Calvana breed of cows - a native endangered breed of cattle. Nearly 60 species of wild orchids and other rare herbaceous species grow along its slopes and on its summit. The most interesting fauna fron an environmental viewpoint is the population of reptiles and amphibians including two protected species: the spectacled salamander that lives in some streams and the yellow-bellied ululon that lives in small ponds.
We start from Vaiano, in the locality of Gamberame, on a paved road until we reach first the village of Faltugnano, with a climb that is very steep in places, then the Valibona memorial along a dirt roadway with a very good bottom. After a short descent, continuing the climb to reach the summit of Monte Maggiore (916 meters): here the trail becomes more uneven but being flanked by a pasture, it will be possible to proceed alongside it, thus avoiding the stonier sections. Among several undemanding ups and downs, you continue to ride along the ridge until you reach the Montecuccoli area where you meet the soft trekking itinerary; from here the route proceeds through the village of Gavazzoli until it meets the Ciclovia del Sole on Strada Regionale (regional road) 325, which takes you back to the starting point, concluding the loop route.
