An itinerary to discover the peaks of Garfagnana

A path through the most beautiful valleys of the area in the Apuan Alps Park

This itinerary takes you to the heart of the Apuan Alps Park, highlighting its points of interest.
Along the approach road to Vagli Sotto, is the artificial lake of Vagli, which hides the village of Fabbriche di Careggine in its deep waters. It has been thirty years now since the lake has been drained, and anticipation is growing for this extraordinary event, which will revive, for one summer, the ancient village founded by blacksmiths from Brescia. Worth a visit are the parish church of San Regolo, the Casa Abrami Museum and the Romanesque church of Sant'Agostino (11th century).

After you've headed up to Vagli di Sopra, you'll soon arrive at Campocatino, the ancient shepherds' alpine pasture lying at the edge of the big meadow at the foot of Mt. Roccandagia. An easy trail highlights the natural features of this "basin" of glacial origin. Also on foot, in about 30 minutes, you can reach the Hermitage of San Viano.

From Campocatino, you descend to Gorfigliano and Gramolazzo, where Mount Pisanino, the highest in the Apuan chain, is reflected in the green waters of the artificial lake.

From here, towards Minucciano, you'll find, before the tunnel, the street which heads into the Seranaia Valley and Orto di Donna, surrounded by the peaks of Pisanino, Cavallo, Contrario, Grondilice and Pizzo d'Uccello. This is the most alpine valley of all Garfagnana, and from here are some of the most precious marble that has made the Apuan Alps famous throughout the world.
