The Blue Mile of the Island of Capraia

A marine itinerary for lovers of free swimming and snorkeling

The Island of Capraia is a paradise for nature lovers, with trails for discovering lakes and coves or diving into the crystal clear sea.

Delimited by 22 buoys, the Blue Mile was created to introduce people to the beauty of the flora and fauna of the sea around the island in total safety (thanks to the ban on sailing, anchoring and mooring). The route, about 1100 meters long and about 20-25 meters wide, allows swimmers more than a nautical mile for exploration, if swum there and back.

The blue sea itinerary extends from the Cave under the Torre del Porto coastal tower (also accessible by land), to the Torretta del Bagno tower under the Fortress of San Giorgio, and beyond. It is suitable not only for lovers of free swimming, but also for those wanting to experience snorkeling, to search for fish, like cardinalfish and sea breams, as well as mollusks, colorful sponges and lots of other living species. Thanks to numerous guides and operators, it is not hard to find organized tours.

Little caves can be spotted along the way, which can be visited by using underwater flashlights to try to spot all the organisms that live in the absence of light, known as aphotic organisms. An enchanting marine oasis that seals the strong bond between the island and the territory, rich in nature, in all its forms, without forgetting Capraia’s great cultural, historical and archaeological heritage.
