Discovering Massa: an itinerary among villas, paths and panoramas

A walk from Margine di Coperta to the village of Massa, amid history and breathtaking views

The route starts from Margine di Coperta, in the municipality of Massa e Cozzile. The branch office of the municipality will be the starting point of the hike. From here, take Via Verdi then continue to Via Vacchereccia, a scenic road that follows the ridge descending from the village of Massa. This ridge represents the main thread of the itinerary, interweaving striking views of the surrounding valley into your journey.

Along the way, you’ll encounter some elegant historic villas, such as Villa Pasquini and Villa Armani, spectators to the timeless charm of this area. Proceeding quite easily, reach the locality of Brunese, where you cross the road coming from Vangile, once bustling with vital industrial factories. From here, interesting trails branch off to explore the shallow valley of Gamberaio to the west and the old settlement of Molina to the east, crossing picturesque stretches on cobblestones.

At this point, the road begins to climb more steeply, enticing you ever deeper into the hilly landscape. Once you reach the Colligiana provincial road near the cemetery, push on for the final stretch to the village of Massa, entering through the historic Porta ai Campi. Here, you can catch your breath while admiring the authentic atmosphere of the village, among stone alleys and vistas that span the entire Valdinievole.
