The amazing Foresta della Lama

Excursion to the most intact area of the Casentino Forest National Park of great historical and naturalistic value.

The Hermitage of Camaldoli, an order founded by St. Romuald at the site of the feud of “Campus Amabili” with its mystical atmosphere, will serve as our introduction to the spectacular cathedral forest of Abete Bianco (Silver Fir) once tended by monks and now protected. We will walk along a section of the “Via dei Legni,” consisting of ancient mule tracks where caravans with heavy Spruce logs laboriously made their way to the high mountain passes to descend to the river port at Porto d'Arno during the years of the Opera del Duomo. 

We will travel along the Fosso degli Acuti to descend into the heart of the Lama Forest, the only wetland area in the Park surrounded by the impervious ridge of Mount Penna where we will find a wild and unspoiled ecosystem. At this time, we will be able to stop in the forest and with a little luck listen to the mighty Bramito of the Red Deer, one of the most exciting and evocative naturalistic experiences.

Picnic stop at the Prato della Lama (Meadow of the Blade) and ascent of the spectacular ditch of the “Scalandrini”, so called for the particular geological conformation of the rocks on which the waterfall flows in leaps in a steep and virgin environment, we will arrive at a beautiful panoramic point where it will be possible to admire the Ridracoli Dam. The tour will continue with the ascent to the Fangacci Pass, where the smell of fir resin will guide us as a sensory experience at the end of this extraordinary excursion.
