Castello di Cireglio

History and nature intertwine along the pathways of the Policarpo Petrocchi Literary Park

Not so many miles from Pistoia, nestled in the green Mountains of Pistoia, stands Castello di Cireglio, a small mountain village surrounded by chestnut and acacia forests.

Castello di Cireglio is known for being the birthplace of Policarpo Petrocchi (1852–1902), a writer and lexicographer famous for the Vocabolario della Lingua Italiana (1887–1891), one of the first Italian language dictionaries published in Italy.

Since 2021, thanks to a collaboration between Literary Parks and the Municipality of Pistoia, the village has become abuzz with cultural initiatives, nature trails and the enhancement of local traditions, celebrating the figure of Petrocchi. Today, the Literary Park is managed by the Associazione Castel di Cireglio.

The most anticipated event is the Festa del Parco (Park Festival) which enlivens the village each year on the first weekend of September with meetings, book presentations, walks, theater and musical performances.

A whole list of reasons to set out to discover this area, where you can organize a walk immersed in nature. In fact, the surrounding forests offer hiking trails covering all levels of difficulty.

On walks in the nearby area, it is still possible to see traces of fortifications and bunkers carved into the rock and, thanks to visits organized by guides and associations in the area, to enter some of these sites to see a piece of history up close.
