The fortified village of Monte dei Bianchi is located in Fivizzano in a panoramic view in the Valle del Lucido. From the village, in fact, you can admire some of the villages of Lunigiana and the majestic peaks of the Apuan Alps. Monte dei Bianchi still has three towers (of the original five) connected in ancient times by walls with gateways some traces of which still remain, while along the main street there are still palaces dating from the 16th-17th centuries.
The history of the village is linked to that of the ancient monastery built in the 8th century when Ato, son of Eugenio il Longobardo, left part of his property to a certain priest Fratellus for the construction of a religious center. In 1105, the Benedictine monk Bernardo degli Uberti decided to build a new monastery dedicated to San Michele Arcangelo on the ruins of the previous one. The religious center was run by canons regular known as white friars, from the color of their habit, from which the locality took its name. Today the church is dedicated to the Madonna della Neve, it is Baroque in style internally while externally it consists of sandstone and columbine stone.
