Ugliancaldo

The village under the sun, in Lunigiana

Located in the Municipality of Casola in Lunigiana, Ugliancaldo stands at about 750 meters above sea level, in a strategic position dominating the Lucido and Tassonaro valleys. There are several hypotheses about the name of this village: one says that it was called hot because of its privileged position since it is exposed to the sun all day long; another is that its name is so in order to distinguish it from Uglianfreddo, on the side of the Mommio valley.

The village with a linear development in the first houses is interrupted by the verticality of the Castle and then continues with a longilinear unfolding of buildings interrupted, again, by the Renaissance Church of St. Andrew. After the earthquake of '37, outside the walls of the Castle and the village, many houses were built that formed a neighborhood known as the "Spazzola", which was built on an artificial esplanade obtained from an overhang of the ridge. Toward the medieval gateway to the hamlet is the Palazzo Foschi-Coiari of late 16th-century origin, rectangular in plan with storerooms and cellars on the ground, mezzanine and main floors and with a garden to the south of the 19th-century period.

Ugliancaldo stretches along the ridge of the mountain in a northeastern direction, where farmyards and courtyards protected by boundary walls open up, buildings mostly of rural matrix with portals dating from the 18th century.
